Keeping Info

For Beginners...

The keeping of reptiles and amphibians is a rewarding experience and is easy if you provide the animals with some basic requirements. Secure accommodation, appropriate food, warmth, water, hiding places, sunlight. These requirements can vary slightly depending on the species kept. Anyone considering keeping reptiles or frogs as pets should understand all of the requirements of the intended animal BEFORE they purchase the animal. In some instances the appropriate cage will cost more than the animal itself and this should be considered. Unfortunately good advice is sometimes hard to find. Reptiles, especially young ones, that are kept poorly will die prematurely.

In the near future we intend to post some specific information on this website for people who are just entering the world of herpetology.

A great source of information is the monthly meetings of the SA Herpetology Group. They provide the opportunity for contact with members who have diverse experience and are keen to pass on information to people preparing to keep reptiles or frogs for the first time, or help solve any keeping problems people may already have. It's a great place to start, get sound unbiased advice and make sure you have all you need to keep happy, healthy herps.

See the membership form in our contact page for details of meeting times and location. Visitors are always welcome.
